Elaine Grainger has taken over as Chairman of Romsey Hospital Friends as Jean Denham has now retired. For any information about the League please contact Elaine on 01794512815.

Romsey Hospital will shortly have an OCT machine for the eye clinic. It will help the diagnosis of glaucoma as well as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. You can read more details about this later in the year when it is operational.

We are also pleased to report that the League has helped towards the costs of converting the Sally Spencer Room into a quiet room for people visiting very sick relatives. We have provided a range of items including a sofa, coffee table, kettle, microwave, crockery and a small fridge. The room will also be used as a rehab facility enabling patients to return home safely.

Please help to support your local hospital.

The League of Friends of Romsey Hospital is a Registered Charity that provides and facilitates many extra services for the benefit of the hospital patients and for its outpatients in the local community.

The Friends provide a very welcome tea and coffee round for patients. League volunteers also help to plant and to look after the large, therapeutic garden which is accessible to beds and wheelchairs. Both in-patients and outpatients are welcome to visit it.

We raise money through our annual Flag Day and our coffee morning in November. We also get funds from membership subscriptions and from many generous donations from the public, including those from other organisations or individuals that raise money on our behalf.

All money given goes to helping the hospital provide patient comforts and fund equipment and services that the NHS could not otherwise afford. Previous items purchased ranged from large and expensive ones to smaller items such as books for the physiotherapy team and garden furniture, and wobble boards, bean bags and weights for the Rehabilitation team.

The Hospital League of Friends work with the local Hampshire Community Health Care trust (HCHC) which is responsible for the hospital, and with the hospital management. We have two representatives on the Development Group which meets with the HCHC once every other month and two on an association called SOCH (Save Our Community Hospitals). The latter includes representatives from the New Forest hospitals and the three local MPís.

A number of years ago, the Romsey United Reform Church donated £400 to the League. This gift paid for a fountain outside the Mother and Baby unit. When the Reverend Terry Hinks blessed the fountain he said that the rest of the money would be used to buy seats for the garden there.

The League always requires the following willing helpers:

  • Help in the hospital garden
  • Tea trolley helpers

If you are able to help with the garden please contact Sylvia Roverato. on 01794518305.
To volunteer help with the teas, please contact the Chairman, Elaine Grainger on 01794512815
