Preface

This report came about as a result of thinking of ways in which the environment in Romsey town centre might be improved. Reducing the impact of the motorcar is clearly the first priority and is essential to protect the future of the town.

A plan to ease traffic problems is proposed in the ‘Romsey Movement and Access study’ recently commissioned by TVBC but the sensitive and emotive issue of car parking is not seriously addressed. The same is true of the TVBC document ‘Southern Test Valley beyond 2000’ published in May 2000. In fact, on page 15 (S4.11) the public is invited “to come forward with its views on parking”.

In this report, the writer outlines a possible solution for the parking problem and other developments which would increase the depth of interest in the town. It is hoped that these ideas, some of which have been proposed before, will be developed by people more expert in the field than the writer and that a consensus view of the future of this important aspect of the town can be established.
