1. Summary
This report describes the work carried out by members of the Romsey and District Society to commission a public work of art for Romsey’s Church Place. Its purpose is to provide a detailed account of the activity for future reference and it is hoped that it will also be of use to other civic societies or groups planning to do something similar.

Created by Gary Breeze and called the Charter Stone, the work was funded by Arts Council England together with local developers, primarily Stanborough Developments and a contribution from the Society.

The project took 2 ˝ years to complete, finishing on time and very close to budget. The Charter Stone was installed on 3rd April 2007 ready for the celebrations taking place in Romsey of the anniversary of the granting of the Charter to the town by King James 1st in 1607.

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, unveiled the Charter Stone on 8th June 2007.
